Exxon’s New Greenhouse Gas Targets

Exxon Mobil Corp pledged on Wednesday to cut its greenhouse-gas emissions 20 percent by 2030, marking its most ambitious emissions target to date but falling far short of the sweeping climate commitments from some of its biggest rivals. While it’s Exxon’s first explicit commitment to reduce overall pollution, the goals stand in stark contrast to plans by BP Plc and Royal Dutch Shell Plc to totally eliminate emissions by the middle of the century. In addition, Exxon’s target only applies to company operations like oil wells and refineries -- known as Scope 1 and 2 sources -- and excludes the much larger volume of emissions from Scope 3 things like burning gasoline. Exxon’s announcement came as part of a revamp of its environmental commitments and long-term strategic outlook after hedge fund Engine No. 1 pulled off a sweeping board shakeup earlier this year that saw a quarter of directors replaced. The victory was widely seen as a warning to the fossil-fuels... > read more

Capital Power And Enbridge Collaborate

Capital Power Corp and Enbridge Inc have announced a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions in the Wabamun area west of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, near Capital Power's Genesee Generating Station. Enbridge and Capital Power have agreed to jointly evaluate and advance a CCS project, with Enbridge as the transportation and storage service provider and Capital Power as the CO2 provider, subject to the Government of Alberta's competitive carbon hub selection process and a future Final Investment Decision (FID). Enbridge, with the support of Capital Power, is applying to develop an open-access carbon hub in the Wabamun area through the government of Alberta's Request for Full Project Proposals process, which is expected to start as early as December 2021... > read more

New Fortress’ LNG-By-Rail Permit

US energy company New Fortress Energy Inc's NFE.N permit to ship liquefied natural gas (LNG) by rail could expire soon. New Fortress wants to transport LNG from a liquefaction plant it is developing in Wyalusing in northeast Pennsylvania via truck or train to a port in Gibbstown, New Jersey. The LNG would then be exported by ship from Gibbstown to customers in the Caribbean and elsewhere. The Gibbstown terminal is owned by Fortress Transportation and Infrastructure Investors LLC's FTAI.N Delaware River Partners LLC subsidiary. New Fortress, however, has not yet made a final decision to build the Pennsylvania plant, which would liquefy natural gas from the Marcellus shale... > read more

Big West Oil Selects UOP’s Tech

Honeywell UOP has announced that Big West Oil has selected ISOALKY™ technology to produce high-quality alkylate used to make clean-burning motor fuels at its Salt Lake City refinery. The refiner is the second in North America to revamp its existing hydrofluoric acid (HF) unit to ISOALKY™. This announcement follows the commercialization of the technology by neighboring Chevron at its Salt Lake City Refinery earlier this year. "We are pleased to announce that Big West Oil has selected the ISOALKY™ technology for our North Salt Lake refinery," said Mike Swanson, president – refining division of Big West Oil. "We chose ISOALKY™ after assessing its key advantages over conventional alkylation technologies. The project will improve operational efficiency at the refinery and represents a key component of our Tier III solution in delivering lower sulfur gasoline to the Utah market." The technology is designed to meet the refining industry’s needs for a cost-effective... > read more

Genvia Signs Pilot Agreements

Schlumberger New Energy, the CEA and partners have announced pilot project agreements between Genvia and critical-industry leaders on the pathway to net zero in the cement and steel industries. Through these agreements, Genvia will scale up the next generation of electrolyzer technology, developed over two decades of R&D at the CEA, to produce clean hydrogen without CO2 emissions, accelerating the decarbonization of multiple industrial sectors. During an official visit to the Schlumberger and Genvia facility on November 16, French President Emmanuel Macron praised the joint public-private partnership and reiterated his commitment and ambition for the hydrogen economy. Leveraging Schlumberger’s industrialization expertise and global footprint, these new agreements will set the stage for developing the entire value chain to use hydrogen as the preferred clean energy carrier. “The agreements are important steps in accelerating... > read more
