Terra Drone signs MoU with Mitsui & Co. to explore establishment of a joint venture in the U.S.

Read Time: 2 mins

Terra Drone Corporation, a leading Japanese drone and Urban Air Mobility technology company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with global trading and investment firm Mitsui & Co., Ltd. to explore the creation of a joint venture company in the United States. The proposed collaboration aims to accelerate business development in drone and advanced air mobility sectors across the Americas by leveraging the complementary strengths of both companies.

Strategic Context and Objectives

As the adoption of drone and AAM technologies gains momentum across North and South America, these innovations are increasingly being applied in infrastructure, logistics, inspection, and unmanned traffic management. With growing activity in low-altitude airspace, the need for robust UTM systems to ensure safe and efficient operations is becoming more pressing.

Terra Drone has been at the forefront of these developments, offering comprehensive drone solutions that combine hardware, software, and services, along with UTM systems designed to address safety and operational challenges in the low-altitude economy. Mitsui & Co., with its global investment footprint, has also shown a strong interest in air mobility technologies since 2021, and the two companies have previously collaborated on several government-backed UTM demonstration projects in Japan, including in Osaka and Hyogo.

Building on this relationship, the MoU sets the foundation for expanding their partnership into the US market, where the companies will explore commercial opportunities in next-generation air mobility.

Planned Joint Venture Details

According to the MoU, the joint venture would be headquartered in the United States and majority-owned by Terra Drone. The venture will operate independently of Terra Drone’s existing US operations and is expected to focus on the following business activities:

  • Investment in drone and AAM-related companies across the Americas.

  • Provision of drone and AAM-related services.

  • Manufacturing, sales, and distribution of associated products.

Looking Ahead

Terra Drone and Mitsui & Co. will now begin formal discussions to assess the viability and structure of the joint venture. While the immediate financial impact on Terra Drone’s FY2025 consolidated results is expected to be minimal, the company plans to issue further announcements should any developments arise requiring public disclosure.

The partnership marks another step in both companies’ commitment to shaping the future of air mobility and developing solutions to meet the evolving demands of the low-altitude economy.
