Read Time: 2 mins

Petrobras has made a significant oil discovery in the ultra-deep waters of the Potiguar Basin at the Anhangá exploratory well within the POT-M-762_R15 Concession. Situated close to the boundary between Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte states, approximately 190 km from Fortaleza and 250 km from Natal, the 1-BRSA-1390-RNS (Anhangá) well operates at a water depth of 2,196 meters, situated on the Brazilian Equatorial Margin.

This marks the second discovery in the Potiguar Basin for the year 2024, following the identification of hydrocarbons in the Pitu Oeste Well, located within the BM-POT-17 Concession, approximately 24 km from Anhangá. However, further assessments are required to fully evaluate these discoveries. Petrobras holds the operatorship of both concessions, maintaining a 100 percent stake.

The ongoing exploratory activities in the Equatorial Margin underscore Petrobras’ commitment to replenishing reserves and exploring new frontiers to meet global energy demands amid the ongoing energy transition.

The execution of the recent campaign was conducted without any incidents, aligning with Petrobras’ established track record of operational excellence and unwavering safety standards, thereby reaffirming the company’s dedication to prioritizing the well-being of individuals and the environment.

Petrobras CEO, Jean Paul Prates, highlighted the company’s extensive experience, boasting nearly 3,000 wells drilled in deep and ultra-deepwater environments, all accomplished without any incidents or environmental impacts. This wealth of experience, combined with technical expertise amassed over nearly seven decades, positions Petrobras to navigate new frontiers and execute operations within the Equatorial Margin with the utmost safety.

In addition to its activities in the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, Petrobras expanded its portfolio in 2023 by acquiring new blocks in the Pelotas Basin in southern Brazil and securing stakes in three exploratory blocks in São Tomé and Príncipe, a nation situated on the west coast of Africa.
