Fort McKay First Nation and Suncor have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to explore a potential oil sands lease development opportunity on Fort McKay reserve lands in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and Fort McKay First Nation Traditional Territory. This partnership builds on years of collaboration and signifies a significant step forward for FMFN and Suncor in their commitment to reconciliation and responsible resource development.

Chief Raymond Powder of Fort McKay First Nation expressed his enthusiasm for the agreement, highlighting the opportunity to create sustainable prosperity and safeguard the environment for future generations. The MOU allows FMFN to govern oil sands activity on their land while ensuring the values of stewardship and care are upheld.

Suncor, in its role as a partner, will undertake technical and commercial feasibility assessments to determine the economic viability of mineable ore on Lease 174C, which is located on FMFN Reserve Land. This potential opportunity aligns with Suncor’s existing operations and could provide bitumen supply options beyond 2040.

Both Fort McKay First Nation and Suncor are committed to fostering economic self-determination for Indigenous communities through mutual trust and respect. They share a common goal of maximizing mutual prosperity while minimizing environmental impacts. Suncor, as a member of the Pathways Alliance, is dedicated to achieving net-zero emissions from its operations by 2050.

Chief Powder emphasized the collaborative and reliable partnership between Fort McKay First Nation and Suncor, highlighting the positive impact on the community’s growth and future opportunities. This partnership represents a significant step towards reconciliation, empowering Fort McKay First Nation to shape their own prosperous and sustainable future.
