EnviTec Biogas has achieved a key milestone in the United States with the commissioning of its largest anaerobic digestion facility in the country to date. Operated by its U.S. subsidiary, the plant—developed in partnership with SJI Renewable Energy Ventures and regional suppliers—is located in South Dakota and began operations earlier this year.
The facility processes more than 300,000 gallons of manure daily from over 9,500 dairy cows. It is expected to produce approximately 483 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) of renewable natural gas, equivalent to around 177,000 million BTU annually. This development strengthens EnviTec Biogas’s footprint in the U.S. renewable energy sector, where the company has been active since its first project launch in 2012.

“This facility marks the fifth of a total of 15 biogas plants we are developing for our client, a leading company in renewable energy and sustainable solutions,” stated Lars von Lehmden, CEO of EnviTec Biogas USA Inc. Of these 15 plants, eight are located on farms operated by a prominent U.S. agribusiness. “This new facility is a true win-win for both business and the environment,” added Timothy Logan, President of EnviTec Biogas Construction LLC. “Not only does it convert organic dairy waste into renewable biogas, but it also helps reduce the overall carbon footprint of dairy farming.”
Local Manufacturing and Long-Term Support
In addition to engineering and constructing integrated biogas and biomethane upgrading systems, EnviTec Biogas distinguishes itself as the only provider in the U.S. offering high-quality, locally produced concrete tanks. This is made possible through a long-standing partnership with Collins Precast LLC, a leading manufacturer of precast concrete components in the Upper Midwest.
“Our concrete tank design is the first of its kind to be approved in South Dakota,” said Logan. The company’s commitment to service extends beyond construction, as the client has signed a long-term service agreement with EnviTec. This includes scheduled maintenance, on-demand service, 24/7 hotline support, and biological analysis conducted at EnviTec’s office and laboratory facility in Watertown, South Dakota.
During the commissioning and ramp-up phase of the new plant, EnviTec has been performing weekly sampling and analysis to ensure optimal performance.
Expanding U.S. Presence
With the successful delivery of this fifth plant, EnviTec Biogas has now completed one-third of the 15-plant portfolio under its current partnership with SJI. Three additional projects have recently finished cold commissioning and are now moving into the ramp-up phase. EnviTec’s first Minnesota-based plants are also slated to come online later in the year.
Since its founding in 2002, EnviTec Biogas AG has completed over 700 biogas plants in 18 countries, utilising a wide range of feedstocks including dairy manure, food waste, and more. The company’s comprehensive technology portfolio includes anaerobic digestion, gas upgrading, ammonia stripping, bio-LCO₂, and bio-LNG solutions, further establishing EnviTec as a global leader in sustainable energy innovation.
