Energy Dome signs first U.S. contract with Alliant Energy

Read Time: 2 mins

Energy Dome, a leader in long-duration energy storage solutions, has announced a significant step in its U.S. commercial-scale deployment through a supply contract for the Columbia Energy Storage Project with Alliant Energy. This milestone follows Energy Dome’s $30 million Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations.

The collaboration took another important step with Alliant Energy’s recent filing for the project with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin. This marks a major advancement for long-duration energy storage, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to renewable energy expansion while maintaining grid stability and affordability.

Claudio Spadacini, CEO of Energy Dome, praised the partnership, stating, “This is excellent news for long-duration energy storage in North America. Our collaboration with Alliant Energy is about innovation and creating opportunities for scaled deployment in the U.S. energy sector.”

Alliant Energy’s executive vice president, Raja Sundararajan, shared similar sentiments: “The signed supply contract with Energy Dome is a critical milestone for our pioneering Columbia Energy Storage Project. The CO2 Battery stood out as a cost-effective, efficient, and scalable solution.”

The Columbia Energy Storage Project will feature Energy Dome’s 20MW/200MWh CO2 Battery, capable of powering approximately 18,000 homes in Wisconsin for 10 hours on a single charge. Energy Dome will provide support throughout the project’s development, ensuring the CO2 Battery system is smoothly integrated into Alliant’s energy infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the construction of Energy Dome’s first CO2 Battery plant in Sardinia, Italy, is progressing rapidly, with completion expected by Q1 2025. This plant will serve as a template for the U.S. project, ensuring efficient construction and operation at the Columbia site in Wisconsin.
